The biodiversity hotspots approach to the conservation of ecosystems is a highly targeted strategy for tackling the challenge of biodiversity loss at the global level. As many hotspots cross national borders, the approach transcends political boundaries and fosters coordination and joint efforts across large landscapes for local and global benefits. The convergence of critical areas for conservation with millions of people who are impoverished and highly dependent on healthy ecosystems for their survival is also more evident in the hotspots than anywhere else.By strategically focusing on the hotspots in developing countries, CEPF provides critically needed resources to help preserve the diversity of life and healthy ecosystems as essential components of stable and thriving societies.A Strategic Framework sets the 5-year strategy for our global program beginning in July 2007.At the hotspot level, strategy development with a rich mix of partners is a unique part of our approach. The process is led by civil society groups and includes diverse stakeholders to develop a shared strategy from the outset. The strategya key part of the ecosystem profile developed for each hotspotguides the award of all grants. The CEPF Donor Council has approved 18 ecosystem profiles to date. | |
